Terry Flatt

Terry Flatt is the Pocono Photo Club August Photographer of the Month!

He  is a retired professor of music from East Stroudsburg University where he taught Music Theatre, Opera, and Voice.  He served as Department Chair for nine years.  He has an extensive career at both the university and professional levels as a director of Opera and Music Theatre.

As a former President of the Pocono Photo Club, he stays active in the local photo scene, sharing experience with the membership, helping when he can, and learning from members with more experience.  He now spends his winter months in Florida where he has expanded his photographic interest to bird photography leading to presentations of that media.

He has exhibited works in and around the area as well as performed photographic projects for Smithfield Township, judged photo contests and has been a photo club presenter.  In December, 2016 he compiled a twenty-three picture permanent photo display for Stroud Township.  He sells his work at various local Art Shows and Exhibits.

How did you get started in photography?

My interest in photography began at an early age and grew deeper as my desire expanded to see and experience new places through travel.  I have traveled to virtually every state in the union as well as foreign countries including Great Britain, Europe, Africa, South America, as well as Australia/New Zealand, and more recently Norway and Iceland.  My most recent travel was to Glacier National Park.

What equipment do you use?

I shoot with an Olympus M1 MKII.

I use the Olympus 12-100 lens and the Panasonic 100-400 primarily for bird and nature  photography.

What is your favorite genre and subject matter?

I guess my main photographic interest is for scenic, and nature.  I got into bird photography via a friend who I met judging a photographic contest.  We have photographed birds primarily in New England, Florida and other areas of the South.  Since I now spend Winters in Florida which is a bird paradise, I’ve been able to expand on this area.  I love to do portraits but have little opportunity except for grand kids and family.

Is there anything else that you would like to share?

I enjoy photographing with other photographers and sharing information with others.  I always want to get nature (birds, animals, etc.) in as much of a natural setting as possible.  Birds on bird feeders are pretty and nice to look at, but are not particularly photogenic.  Birds in flight are always a plus.

And finally, I love to travel and photograph new places.  Just got back from a trip to Glacier NP.  It is every bit as beautiful as advertised.  Got up early and enjoyed the beautiful lighting on the mountains.
